Virtual Brewery Vote 2: Hops and Strength

As you know the votes have been counted and IPA was by far the winner with 36.5% of the vote.

Golden, Honey, Smoked Porter and a Strong Old ale were all joint 2nd place with 11.5% of the vote.

Now that's been decided, it's on to the finer detail. This week we're going to choose the strength and the hops as this will decide the kind of IPA that is to be brewed.

Hops add bitterness, flavour and aroma to a beer and they all have different profiles depending on the cultivar and even where they are grown. I suppose a bit like a wine grape. Some IPA's are brewed with a single hop which will let the character of the hop shine. However, many are brewed with a blend to give a balance of bitterness and flavour.

Hop Options for the next vote:

A hop used more for bittering and flavour than aroma. Clean tasting with a long lasting bitterness. Less citrus and more herbal, earthy and spicy flavours. Also called Tomahawk.

The strongest bittering hop. Strong citrus flavours: grapefruit, orange and tangerine. The hop head's choice! Used in American and Imperial style IPA's

Less bitter than Summit, with light citrus flavours and a floral aroma. Pine notes and with grapefruit flavours.

A German breed of hop and used in Belgian style IPA's. Ideally used in a blend rather than single hop. Gives a slightly herbal, earthy flavour and is used more for bittering. Ideal if you like a long bitter finish but none of the citrus or floral flavours.

we'll announce the winner at the end of the week and then the vote for malt.

The 5 Virtual brewers who will be coming to Lymestone on the 4th June to brew Bob's IPA are:

It's going to be a great day with hopefully lots of beer tasting! We'll post the pictures on here.
