  • Virtual Brewery Vote 2: Hops and Strength

As you know the votes have been counted and IPA was by far the winner with 36.5% of the vote. Golden, Honey, Smoked Porter and a Strong Old ale were all joint 2nd place with 11.5% of the vote. Now that's been decided, it's on to the finer detail. This week we're going to choose the strength and the hops as this will decide the kind of IPA that is to be brewed.

  • Press Release - Virtual Brewery

Specialist online retailer, Best of British Beer, has joined forces with its neighbour Lymestone Brewery to devise a completely original concept by offering customers the chance to become ‘virtual brewers’ and take part in the creation of a brand new beer.

  • Bob's Virtual Brewery Update

We’ve been overwhelmed by the response to Bob’s Virtual Brewery and there have been some really great and unusual suggestions for the type of beer that you are going to produce. We’ve had people wanting Imperial Stout at one end of the colour spectrum to American style Triple Hopped IPAs at the other.

  • We never put a good bottle of beer down

Will has a pile of bottles he calls the Battersea Beer home. If a bottle gets a bit messy or arrives with no label it gets put aside and eventually we get round to drinking it or more likely, give it away. The boys in packing are the usual beneficiaries so Keiran can sometimes be found scratching the label off a Citra!

  • Siba Beer X Factor

I’ve never had much luck at betting except for a very lucky winning streak at a very wet Haydock Park in February 1996. My performance at this year’s Cheltenham Festival was all too predictably abysmal. My mate who is an accomplished sports broadcaster has tried to convince me that you can read enough into the previous form to spot a winner, but he certainly is no millionaire, so I take what he says with a pinch of salt.

  • March's Monthly Beer Club

As the days get a bit longer, a bit warmer and a bit lighter, we’ve added some cracking pale and golden beers to our list for our March subscribers. We welcome back some old favourite breweries with Shropshire Gold, the multi award winning ale from Salopian in Shrewsbury. For a small producer, they have won a whole load of CAMRA and SIBA awards and I know they have plans to increase their bottled range. We’re lucky enough to live near three great pubs that stock this brewery’s beers and this is one of my all-time favourites.

  • World Book Night

The newest member of the Best of British Beer crew, Sara, came into the office with some exciting news last week. She’s been selected as a ‘giver’ for World Book Night. Now, I was familiar with World Book Day, through various nephews and nieces talking about the free books they’d got and the fancy dress costumes they’d worn to school.

  • February Subscription Beers

I’ve chosen a great range of ales for this month’s membership schemes. I think I’ve inadvertently set a record for the greatest distances apart for our brewery partners – it’s almost 500 miles from Williams Bros in Alloa, central Scotland to Yates’ Brewery on The Isle of Wight. There’s the usual mix of award winning brews including a fantastic bit of winter sunshine from Pam at Monty’s in mid Wales and Tunnel Vision, a classic English bitter with numerous CAMRA awards to its name from Wiltshire’s Box Steam.

  • Real Ale Rail Trail

A recent report I read from Network Rail highlighted the growth in sales of food and drink at railway stations and how they have outstripped the High Street. In my mind there are 2 very distinct kinds of food & drink offerings at Britain’s stations.

  • How I source beers for the Club

One of the nicest parts of my job is choosing the beers that feature in our subscription schemes and while you may think it’s a dirty job, someone has to do it. My mantra is always to source unusual brews from unusual breweries from all over Britain. I’ve picked out just a few of the dozen beers we will be stocking.
